UPDATE: Solange has a 2017 Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance for her song, “Cranes In the Sky.”

Have you ever listened to a song and wondered how it really came together? Hrishikesh Hirway is a Los Angeles-based musician who invites artists onto his podcast, Song Exploder, to talk about how they put a particular song together.

In the most recent episode of Song Exploder, Hirway sat down with R&B singer/songwriter Solange (Knowles) to dissect the Grammy-nominated "Cranes in the Sky," one of the many highlights from her highly-regarded 2016 album, "A Seat at the Table."

Solange reveals how a period of personal turmoil, plus some inspiration from the women in her life, formed the inspiration for the song's lyrics and mood.
