The filmmaker behind the HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, is in the news after police arrested the subject of his latest project just before the final episode aired.

The Jinx focuses on Durst, a billionaires son who has long been suspected of the murder of his wife and a former colleague. Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki has spent years investigating Durst's story.

As the LA Times' Rebecca Keegan notes, Jarecki has something in common with Durst - both are the sons of billionaires. That may have made Durst more willing to talk with Jareki, and it certainly gives the documentary maker some advantages over most people in the field.

"He's not your typical documentary filmmaker crossing his fingers and waiting for a PBS grant," says Keegan.

Jarecki, she notes, founded the site Movifone with his father, and later sold it to AOL. She says his interest in complex stories where the truth is murky make for great movies, and his ability to self-finance his work means he can be truly independent.

Rebecca Keegan joins us each Monday for On the Lot, our look at the business of film.
