KPCC's Meghan McCarty brings you the Weekend Alibi, a roundup of the best weekend entertainment around L.A.
This weekend, change up your traditional Memorial Day celebrations and check out the Degenerate Prom art show. For many, Prom is a time of magical memories, of young love and innocence. Or, as this exhibit will gleefully demonstrate, Prom can be a horrifying firestorm of pigs blood and telekinetic rage. Head to the Mezz Bar downtown for this night to remember -- replete with a Dada-esque art show, live music and a non-gender specific Prom queen ceremony.
Or, you could say good bye to cliches in Mexican film and attend the "HOLA Mexico Film Festival." Audiences can see some of the most innovative films coming out of Mexico, from documentaries and shorts to the premiere of a major feature starring Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria. The festival kicks off this weekend and runs through May 30th at the Montalban Theater in Hollywood.
Or, you could attend the Silver Lake Jubilee. While a jubilee might sound like an old timey fancy dance celebration, this jubilee will be chock full of newfangled music, comedy, food and crafts. The lineup spans two full days and five different stages and brings together a diverse group of performers from Fidlar to La Santa Cecilia and Aloe Blacc. Plus there will be more than 40 comedians performing throughout the weekend, like Meltdown's Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani.
