It's the first official weekend of fall. You can kick off the season watching an outdoor movie at a winery, cracking lobster claws or watching dogs surf. Family-friendly and furry-friend-friendly events abound this weekend.

Redondo Beach Lobster Festival

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 22 - Sunday, Sept. 24
WHERE: Seaside Lagoon, Redondo Beach MAP
COST: $15 for one-day adult admission, $5 for one-day kids admission

Monday is National Lobster Day, but you can celebrate all weekend at the Redondo Beach Lobster Festival. There will be 27,000 fresh lobsters served in a variety of dishes at this three-day feast. There's also live music, stand-up paddleboard lessons and a kids zone. Don't forget your lobster costume!


Malibu Movie Under the Stars: "Mamma Mia"

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 22, 8 p.m. - 10 p.m.
WHERE: Malibu Wines, Malibu MAP
COST: Free

Even though summer is over, the outdoor movies are still going. This movie's picturesque venue: a vineyard. Bring your friends, loved ones and a picnic to this 21+ event. The screening is free, but it's recommended guests buy a bottle of wine.


Dino Fest

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23 - Sunday, Sept. 24, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
WHERE: Natural History Museum of L.A. MAP
COST: $12 for adults, $5 for children Get tickets

Go back in time with the Natural History Museum. They're hosting tons of family-friendly, hands-on, dinosaur-themed activities this weekend, including fossil digs and talks with paleontologists. If you're a movie lover, there are screenings of classic dinosaur flicks, a discussion with a special effects animator and replicas of vehicles from "Jurassic Park."


Abbot Kinney Festival

WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
WHERE: Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice MAP
COST: Free

The hottest street in Venice is hosting a huge festival on Sunday. There will be more than 300 vendors to peruse, food trucks lining the street, three beer gardens and four different stages for live music. The kids have an entire zone of their own, featuring carnival rides and games.  


Museum Day Live!

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23
WHERE: Various museums MAP
COST: Free

If Dino Fest isn't right for you and yours, check out another museum that's been on your list on Saturday — for free. Smithsonian Magazine sponsors the event. You just have to print a ticket from their website, and that will get you into museums like the Japanese American National Museum or The Autry. Find a participating museum here.

There's nothing cuter than a dog enjoying the ocean, and at this event, you'll probably see them catching waves better than you do. The surf events are free for spectators— both human and any aspiring surf dogs you want to bring, even if they're content to stay on the sand. Other events for animal lovers this weekend include the massive Wiggle Waggle Walk in Pasadena and the Catchella adoption event in South Bay.
