A man was shot and killed by a California Highway Patrol officer after walking into an office building with a bag over his hands and ordering employees to get on the ground, authorities say.

The man followed an employee into the Ronald Reagan State Building in downtown Los Angeles around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, CHP Sgt. Saul Gomez told the Associated Press.

He said the middle-aged man took "aggressive shooting stance," and that a CHP officer guarding the building fired at him three times.

No officers were hurt, and it is not clear whether the suspect had a weapon, authorities said.

A stretch of 3rd Street is closed near Spring Street as CHP officials and the Los Angeles Police Department investigate.
