A 15-year-old Santa Monica student has died after taking LSD and falling from an apartment building balcony.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Santa Monica High Principal Antonio Shelton said in a letter addressed to parents on Monday that freshman Andre Zuczek died from major brain trauma over the weekend.
Shelton's letter said Zuczek's parents wanted to share the full circumstances of his death in order to warn students of the dangers of drugs.
Shawn Davis, a prevention manager with the Clare Foundation who works with high school students, heard about Zuczek’s death on Monday through the district’s mental health coordinator.
“It always saddens me to hear when there’s an incident that triggers more awareness of the prevention work we need to be doing in our community,” Davis told KPCC. “That’s the hardest part about what I do.”
All seventh grade students in Santa Monica schools are required to attend a drug-abuse prevention class led by the Clare Foundation, Davis said.
