Pomona police shot and killed an armed suspect after receiving reports of gunshots near an apartment Wednesday evening, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
The shooting occurred near the 900 block of North San Antonio Avenue after deputies responded to the call and encountered a suspect walking in the vicinity armed with a handgun, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez told KPCC. Both the suspect and the deputies opened fire.
“The suspect ran into an alley that was located on the rear of the apartment," Navarro-Suarez said. "An additional exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and Pomona officers."
Three deputies discharged their weapons. The suspect was hit and was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.
An investigation after the incident revealed that two other people were injured before deputies arrived. The suspect had entered a residence, where he shot and wounded two people — one male and one female victim, Navarro-Suarez said.
A handgun believed to have been used by the suspect was recovered at the scene.
The victims were transported to a local hospital and are in fair condition, Navarro-Suarez said.
Investigators are still unsure what motivated the shooting and whether the suspect knew the victims. None of those involved have been identified.
