A taxi driver was killed after being assaulted by a passenger early Sunday morning, apparently over a dispute over the fare, police officials told KPCC.
Hollywood patrol officers responded to call about an assault in progress at 3 a.m. When they arrived at a gas station, the victim was unresponsive, Lt. John Radke with the Los Angeles Police Department said. The taxi driver was rushed to a hospital but soon died. The driver was identified by the Yellow Cab company as Asfawosen Alemseged, 47, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the area showed that the suspect and the victim were both inside the cab when an argument broke out, Radke said.
“The suspect got out of the car, continued to assault the victim, and it looks like he was trying to take the victim’s money,” he said.
The footage showed Alemseged was struck at least three times before losing consciousness.
Radke described the suspect as 5 feet 8 inches tall, in his late 30s with thick hair. Police don't have a sketch of him yet and are still reviewing the video footage.
