A man suspected of being a gang member was killed and two Los Angeles Police Department officers were injured Friday night in a shooting in Boyle Heights.
Police say a gunfight broke out around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets. One of the officers was shot in the shoulder and another complained of pain, and both were rushed to the hospital. The second officer suffered a wrenched back, police said.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck spoke to KPCC's media partner NBC4 after visiting the officers at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
"They're both resting comfortably right now," Beck said. "Their families are with them. The officer that was shot is joined by his wife and his 1-year-old daughter at his bedside, and he's in great spirits."
Police with the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division said both officers were in a gang suppression unit.
No information was available on what led to the confrontation with the alleged gang member who reportedly shot the police officer. The alleged gang member died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The officers were wearing body cameras and the video will be reviewed, police said.
The shooting is being investigated by the LAPD's Use of Force Division, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Justice System Investigation Division Shooting Team and the Los Angeles Police Commission's Inspector General's Office.
