Santa Clara police cleared in killing of woman who had bat

Prosecutors say police officers in California lawfully shot and killed a suicidal, mentally ill and highly intoxicated woman who came at them with an aluminum bat last year.

The Santa Clara County district attorney's office made the determination Thursday in a 17-page report on the April 13, 2014, incident.

The report says 53-year-old Deborah Colbert told dispatchers that she wanted Santa Clara police officers to shoot her, and that she would use the bat to bash in the heads of officers who responded.

At her home, officers asked Colbert to come out peacefully. When officers tried to open the door, Colbert burst from the apartment into a hallway wielding a bat above her head.

The report says police told her to drop the bat and she refused. Police shot her three times.
