Propane worker critically burned in blast

A propane truck driver is fighting for his life after a sudden blast burned him from head to toe.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says the man, who's about 40 years old, is hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.

Humphrey says the man is employed by a company that trucks propane to fill industrial and commercial tanks. He was filling a tank at a scrap metal yard shortly before noon Monday when there was a sudden flash fire.

Humphrey says the man didn't immediately realize how badly he was burned so he reeled up his hose, got back into the truck and drove about 100 feet to a restroom to cool himself off.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation.
