Team USA defeated Slovakia 7-1 in its opening game of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, according to USAHockey.com.

USA went on a six-goal streak in the second period, pulling away from a 1-1 tie and maintaining its lead to the end. Los Angeles Kings player Dustin Brown made the seventh and final goal on a pass from Washington Capitals' John Carlson. Goaltender Jonathan Quick, also of the L.A. Kings, stopped 22 of 23 shots from Slovakia.

The U.S. has faced Slovakia twice before in the Olympics and never won. In 1994, the teams tied 3-3 in overtime, and in 2006 Slovakia bested the U.S. 2-1.

USA Hockey took home the silver medal in 2010. Thirteen of 25 members of the 2014 team are returnees this year.
