When the US Supreme Court blocked the public broadcast of the Proposition 8 trial, John Ireland took matters into his own hands. He started MarriageTrial.com, a website that features videos of actors re-enacting the historic case based on court transcripts and first-hand accounts from bloggers. Today when Judge Vaughn Walker issued his ruling overturning Prop 8, John Ireland and his troupe went back to work. He took a break to talk with KPCC's Alex Cohen.

Ireland said they were camped out for today's decision in the attic of Ted Heyck's home. Heyck plays Vaughn Walker in the MarriageTrial.com video. Since the actor had a previous career as a lawyer, there are a bunch of law books there which served as a good backdrop for their re-enactment of today's ruling.

Ireland and his crew feverishly worked to print out all 136 pages of the ruling and record them for their online audience.

Here is Ireland's favorite part of today's ruling:

Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.

Ireland says they're re-enacting the ruling so that people can have easy access to the most important parts, seeing as most people won't have the time to read through the entire thing.

You can listen to KPCC's Alex Cohen chat with John Ireland about the project when it first started.
