Cost for Los Angeles's Kennedy school complex now $578 million

The price tag for the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools complex at the former Ambassador Hotel has now soared past $578 million.

It's the Los Angeles Unified School District's costliest school project. Initial estimates put the cost at more than $400 million.

The school board on Tuesday approved an additional $6.6 million in costs for safety and historic preservation at the complex for 4,200 students. The main campus of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools will opens this fall.

In January, the school board approved naming the complex after Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, who was killed at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. Like the Ambassador, the Kennedy school complex rises five stories.
