Overnight Dana Point crash leaves one dead

One person died and another was injured in a solo-vehicle crash early Saturday on Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point.

The crash on the PCH at the Street of the Blue Lantern was reported at 2:47 a.m., Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Roger Dawes said.

One person died, and a passenger was taken to a hospital, Dawes said. A bystander upset by the crash also was taken to a hospital, Dawes said.

The Dana Point Festival of the Whales' parade is scheduled later this morning on the same stretch of the PCH, but the crash investigation should be cleared well before the event, Dawes said.

This is the height of whale-watching season in Dana Point, with 40-50 California Grays cruising past the landmark headland cliffs each day, according to the festival's Web site.
