With a $28 billion budget in its control, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors wields tremendous power. On Tuesday, October 26, at the Cerritos Public Library, AirTalk host Larry Mantle moderated a debate between Janice Hahn and Steve Napolitano, the two candidates still competing for Don Knabe’s District 4 seat. The race has had limited media coverage, yet the debate was standing room only, lively and sometimes heated. “Clearly it’s not for a lack of interest on the part of the public,” Mantle said at the start of the debate, noting the evening’s healthy turnout. The candidates discussed their positions – often conflicting – on combatting homelessness and mental illness, addressing conditions at the county men’s central jail, and improving transportation infrastructure and traffic. The candidates also had a charged exchange over campaign financing.
