Speak the speech: Learning language through performance
School can be hard enough, and it can be even harder for students who are learning to speak English. But the performing arts — in particular, theater – can help. In an effort to improve the learning process for English learners, some educators are using theater techniques to teach English and important communication skills so that students can speak up and speak out with confidence. And incorporating drama can take away some of the classroom stress and put students in a mental and emotional space where it’s easier to learn.
Nearly a quarter of the students in California’s public schools are English learners. Are you or your child one of them, or are you their teacher? What challenges have you faced when trying to learn a new language? Have the performing arts influenced your ability to communicate?
And how do theater arts interact with academics and testing? What are the challenges English language learners face when trying to navigate the education system, and can the arts help?
