Los Angeles 3rd District supervisor candidate Bobby Shriver gave $350,000 more to his own committee in the last campaign reporting period — March 18 to May 17 — bringing his personal contribution to $1 million. His campaign has raised a total of $1.8 million since it began.

Shriver has rejected L.A. County's voluntary campaign spending limits, allowing him to spend unlimited amounts of his own money on the campaign.

His main rival, former state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, raised about $468,000 in the same reporting period to reach a total of about $1.2 million over the course of her campaign, said Parke Skelton, her campaign consultant.

"We are quite competitive," Skelton said, pointing to Kuehl's endorsements by the Democratic Party, Sierra Club, National Organization for Women and unions representing teachers and nurses. "Sheila has a very strong base and a very strong campaign — without blowing off the County's expenditure limits."

Shriver campaign consultant Bill Carrick said the county's voluntary $1.4 million spending limit was too low to run an effective campaign in the vast Third Supervisor district against an experienced candidate like rival Sheila Kuehl. More than 2 million residents live in the district, which includes parts of Los Angeles, and extends to the San Fernando Valley, Calabasas, Malibu, West L.A., Santa Monica and north to Glendale.

Shriver's rejection of the spending limit raised the $1,500 per person contribution limit and spending limits for Kuehl and other candidates in the race, West Hollywood Councilman John Duran and former Malibu Mayor Pamela Conley Ulich.
