The distinctly different world views of Democrats and Republicans were on view following Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
President Obama argued that governmental leadership and investment in infrastructure, education, and energy is essential for the country to compete globally and to build its domestic economy.
Responding Republicans claimed that any additional government spending, including those areas the President highlighted, would inflict further damage on the country. Though GOP members have some disagreements on the extent of cuts, all of them say the need for significant cuts, coupled with no additional spending, trumps everything else.
To oversimplify, Democrats are arguing that you’ve got to spend money to make money, while Republicans claim that all additional spending is harmful.
How can any commonality be reached when the parties’ world views are so different? What do you see as the way forward?
