How do you deal with the mentally ill in your life?

Many of us have contact with someone we suspect struggles with mental illness. Maybe it’s a family member or someone we encounter out in the world.  Regardless, it can be difficult to figure out how to interact with or deal with the person.

This was certainly true for many of those who knew Jared Loughner from Pima Community College, where the young man had been a student.  School administrators finally barred him from campus, unless he produced a letter from a mental health professional attesting to his fitness.

The college has been criticized by some for not doing enough to alert authorities to Loughner’s psychological problems.  However, it’s not clear how much more the school could’ve legally done.

Tuesday morning on AirTalk, we asked listeners how they deal with mentally ill individuals they meet.  Several callers had a family member who presented a really tough challenge.  Others worked in schools where mental illness is a fact of life.

Do you think more could’ve or should’ve been done to identify Jared Loughner’s problems to authorities?
