The future of the GOP -- clarity vs. inclusiveness

Tuesday morning on AirTalk, we looked at next week’s election for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee.  The committee is charged with fundraising for candidates and get-out-the-vote efforts in close races.

Incumbent Michael Steele is widely perceived as a long-shot to return, with four challengers vying to take his place.  However, central to the decision is the vision a chairman has for the party’s future.

Should the Republican Party pursue Steele’s strategy of welcoming Americans with a wide range of views on social issues, or even on the proper role of government?  Or would the party be better served by demanding philosophical consistency among its members?

What do you think?  Please let me know your party affiliation, if any, along with your comment.
