Los Angeles Unified school board candidates have collectively raised $293,877 in support of a run for the open South Los Angeles seat. The majority of funds are held by two candidates, Alex Johnson and Genethia Hudley-Hayes, according to statements filed Monday.

The Los Angeles City Ethics Commission does not have financial statements for about half of the original candidates. As of the latest filing, the total number of candidates has dropped from 13 to seven. Those six remaining candidates may still be written in.

Last year's race attracted millions of dollars, and contributions to candidates in this year's special election, called after the death of former board member Marguerite LaMotte, are expected to grow.

The ethics commission scheduled the next filing deadlines for May 22nd and May 30th. 

The June 3rd election will incur significant costs for the city. The last school board special election back in 2006 cost over $1.5 million in the primary and about $346,000 in the runoff.

Rachel Johnson, one of three union endorsed candidates, had no financial activity and reported zero contributions, expenditures and cash on hand.  She did however, meet all filing requirements and will appear on the ballot.
