Mike Kessler served as the senior editor for investigations and projects for our newsroom from 2019 until Feb. 2021. His work has appeared in Outside, Wired, Men's Journal, GQ, Men’s Health, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Los Angeles magazine, where he was a contributing writer for several years. A two-time finalist for the National Magazine Award (2008, Public Interest category; 2012, Reporting category), his writing has been anthologized in Best American Magazine Writing and Outside magazine's true-crime compilation, The Darkest Places: Unsolved Mysteries, True Crimes, and Harrowing Disaster in the Wild.

Kessler was a 2017 Knight-Wallace Fellow at University of Michigan, where he studied criminal justice and wrongful convictions with U-M Law School's Michigan Innocence Clinic. Kessler has been a staff editor at Outside magazine, executive editor of Time Inc.'s Skiing magazine, and features editor at Denver's 5280 magazine. In 2001, he co-developed and co-wrote a four-part, outdoor sports and travel documentary series for the Fox network, and in 2014 he was a part-time producer on KCRW's To the Point and Which Way, LA.
